In 2015 I was in more pain than I had ever experienced.  As a physical therapist, I was using the same approach I used with treating others' low back pain.  But something was missing.  It wasn't working for me!

I had a physical practice of yoga which helped.  But it wasn't until I tried to meditation and breathing during many sleepness nights that things really began to change.

I began to notice the fluctuations of my pain, not only with movement but with STRESS.

With new research into pain, stress and the nervous system's role in pain, I learned why I had suffered for so many years with pain.  I then put everything into practice, blending physical therapy with yoga.

Now, I no longer suffer with low back pain.  I no longer fear an activity that used to cause me days of pain.  I continue to achieve more of what I love even as I age!

The right type of consistent practice will result in long-term lasting relief of low back pain.

The key here is right effort.
That doesn't mean more intensity!
 It means following a process the improves your awareness of what you need in each moment to heal your pain.

For years I was looking outside of myself for the answers to my back pain.  I expected the "right" exercise or the "right" hands-on treatment to "fix" my pain.  But it wasn't working.  The process I share in Yoga for a Better Back empowered me to create the "fix" for myself.

 

2.  EXAMINE body, mind and spirit to find the root sources of your pain.

 

A process of self-assessment takes you beyond the sensation of physical pain.  You will identify tissue tightness, muscle weakness, negative thoughts, fixed beliefs, and memories that are keeping you in pain.  With a thorough understanding, you can heal old wounds to feel less pain today.

 

3.  ALIGN and you move in ways that are safe, no matter the diagnosis or condition of your spine.

 

You may have been programmed to think that you can't move in certain ways OR that movement will "hurt" you.  Take it from me, a physical therapist with over 30 years of experience: THE SPINE IS MEANT TO MOVE! Your fear of movement may actually be what is keeping you stiff, tight, and in PAIN.

Each of the 5 Modules Provides Education, Guided Meditation and Yoga Practices for a total of 12.5 hours of content.

The lessons and practices build upon the previous, therefore the Modules are released to you over 8 weeks.  You can complete the program in 10 weeks or take things slower.  The process allows you to find PEACE for Body, Mind and Spirit!

1.  Start with the Mindfulness Lesson.  This lesson helps you understand how your Brain keeps you in pain and gives you strategies to get out of pain.

2.  The Guided Meditation reinforces the Mindfulness lesson and each audio meditation is 10-12 minutes.  Not too short and not too long and a great place to start!

3.  Each Short Yoga Practice is around 20 minutes.  These practices consist of gentle movement, supported on the floor and includes time for relaxation.

4.  The Physical Lessons include education about functional anatomy, i.e. how the body actually works!  These lessons also provide instruction in how to perform each yoga pose with short video clips with verbal cues, and pictures with written cues.  You won't ever need to wonder if you are doing the pose "properly".

5.  The Long Yoga Practices include poses taught in each lesson.  Each module adds poses to build upon your movements giving you strength and endurance with the right amount of challenge.  

***But if you feel like you need more support, BONUS practices allow you to progress through the program using a chair or while on the floor.

Module 1 (Immediate Access)

Practice Awareness

You can only change what you are aware of.  Once you tune into what you feel: body, mind and spirit, then you will know how to move forward.  You will understand the impact of stress on your pain.  You will know exactly what movements help and hurt.  You will begin to uncover the old hurts that are keeping you in pain today.

Examine

Videos will lead you (just like in Physical Therapy) through self-assessments of:

  • stress response leading to muscle tension and pain
  • spine posture
  • Hip, spine and shoulder range of motion
  • muscular activation
  • postural endurance
  • core strength.

By the end, you will know exactly what areas of the body and mind to direct in your daily practice.

 

Module 3 (access 4 weeks after enrolling)

Align Body, Mind and Spirit

Posture and proper form with exercise are important.  But not as important as being in alignment with your core values.  When your thoughts and actions are out of alignment with your passions and desires, you feel pain.

Module Highlights:

What do you love?  What do you hate?  These questions will lead you to understand the importance of alignment.

  • Investigate your core values
  • Assess your spine posture
  • Embrace a sense of relaxation and subtle movement created with breathing
Module 4 (access 6 weeks after enrolling)

Create CORE Support

There is so much focus on strengthening the muscular core, but what about the core of YOU?  Only when you feel completely supported by YOU can you accept the support of others.  And with this support you create resiliency of Body, Mind and Spirit.

Module Highlights:

The function of the muscular core is misunderstood and therefore trained inappropriately.

  • Understand the role of deep vs. superficial core muscles
  • Relax the superficial spine and abdominal muscles to feel the deep core
  • Engage the deep core muscles and imagine moving in new ways pain-free
Module 5 (access 8 weeks after enrolling)

Explore Mobility

Someone once said: "a fluid spine equals a fluid mind".  When you move with curiosity and the intention to feel better, you will begin to crave movement.

Module Highlights:

You will "let go" of so much more than muscle tension and stiffness to create better movement.

  • Challenge beliefs about your spine and pain that are keeping you in pain
  • Explore sensations during forward and backward bending of the spine
  • Grow confidence in choosing the "right" movements and actions to take

Frequently Asked Questions:

1.  “Can do yoga if I have a herniated disc?”

If you have recently injured your back, like within the last 4 weeks, you may not want to do yoga.  But if you have been told that you have a herniated disc because of an old injury, or you were told this MORE than 3 months ago...YOU can do yoga.  In this program you will learn about the healing process and how to manage movement after a injury.

2.  “Can I participate if I've been told to limit my movement because of degenerative joints (a.k.a. arthritis), laminectomy, fusion,  or other spine condition?"

Our spines were meant to move.  But injury and usual wear and tear may limit how much you are able to move.  However, you shouldn't be afraid to move.  In this program you will learn about your own limits of your movement.  You will also learn to dispel "external" limits to your movement.  Overall, you get to choose how much or how little you can move based on how it makes YOU feel.

3.  "Am I too old to do yoga?"

Check out this woman:

 She recently passed away and at the time of her death was the oldest yoga teacher at the age of 101.  One of the reasons that I love yoga is that I can see myself doing it forever!  You might need to make modifications to the movements and I help you with that in the program.

4. "I've been told that I will eventually need surgery.  Can this program help me?"

I have had clients put off surgery because they were feeling better.  And they put off surgery again, and again.  Even if you do eventually need surgery, you will be stronger and have a better recovery afterward.  You will have a program to return to when you are able.

**There are some indications for spine surgery like numbness and weakness, especially if you have lost bowel or bladder function.  If this is you, I would see your physician or healthcare provider.**

5. "I’m not flexible, can I do yoga?"

That’s exactly why you need yoga.  However my classes tend of focus on strength!  And all the poses an be modified to meet you where you are.

6. "What happens if my pain gets worse?"

There are many gentle movement practices in this program AND several meditations (9!) where all you need to do is find a comfortable position for 10-20 minutes.  You may need more brain training before you progress in the physical training.

People with chronic and persistent pain may have an increase of pain with a new activity.  The goal is to NOT panic and realize that this is a reaction from the brain (top-down) and not from the tissue (bottom-up)
